If you've ever dreamed of directing ships to safe inlets and riding the waves Ariel-style, here's your chance to transform into a mermaid: At Chicago's very own AquaMermaid school you'll trade your feet for fins and learn everything you need to know about mermaid life. Here's what to expect at your very first AquaMermaid Lesson.
WHAT TO WEAR
You'll want to wear a comfortable bathing suit (one or two piece is fine) so you can easily slip into your mermaid fin. Don't forget your goggles if you prefer wearing them in-pool, and a towel. Upon arrival at the school, you'll be fitted into a monofin and then slip on a spandex mermaid tail. This is as close as humans can get to actually becoming a mermaid.
MERMAID CLASSES: NOT JUST FOR KIDS
AquaMermaid offers lessons for both kids ages 7 and up and adults, with classes arranged by both swimming level and age. You'll leave with the skills you need to live as a mermaid, including how to wave to passing ships with your fin, how to dive into the depths and how to give your fellow mermaids a high-fin-five. I participated in a Mommy/Daughter class with my daughter, age 7, and we had a FIN-tastic time together! AquaMermaid lessons also make for a fab girls' night out, birthday or bachelorette party adventure.
Chicago's AquaMermaid school is operated out of the UIC Sports Center located at 828 S. Wolcott Avenue. Be sure to give yourself time to check in by arriving 10–15 minutes prior to the start of class. Lockers are available free of charge for your cell phone and other belongings.
Of course you'll want to capture your new mermaid look on camera, and so the last 10 minutes of class are reserved for free swim and photo opps. During class, however, your fellow mermaids are the only participants allowed in the pool area. Parents, friends and family can watch the class from the other side of the pool windows in the waiting area.
